Lesson 2 of 3

Measure what worked

Turnout, engagement and satisfaction tell you what to repeat and what to fix. A few numbers and an honest debrief go a long way.

You don't need a dashboard full of metrics to get better at hosting. You need a handful of numbers you track every time, and the habit of looking at them.

The funnel

  • Page views: how many people saw the invite.
  • Conversion: what share of viewers registered. If it's low, the page or the audience is off.
  • Check-in rate: what share of registered guests came. If it's low, look at your reminders, timing or price.
  • Return rate: what share of guests came to a previous event. That's how you know you're building something.

Where your guests came from

Not all RSVPs are equal. Compare channels by how many of the people they brought actually showed up, not just how many registered. A newsletter that brings 20 RSVPs and 18 guests beats a social post that brings 60 RSVPs and 15 guests.

How it felt

Numbers tell you what happened; feedback tells you why. Ask one rating question and one open question. Read every answer, then look for patterns, not individual complaints.

The debrief

Within a week, sit down with your co-hosts for 20 minutes. Go through the run of show and sort what happened into three lists: keep, change and drop. Write it down and attach it to the next event's planning doc. That document is how a series gets better every time.
