Look at a December 2026 calendar and the problem jumps out: the Fridays before the holidays are the 4th, the 11th and the 18th. Every office party, friend group and community holiday mixer is fighting over those three nights, plus their Saturdays. The venues that can hold a crowd tend to fill up long before most hosts start looking.
Why October beats December
- You get the date you want instead of the date that's left.
- Guests' calendars are still empty, so your save-the-date lands first.
- You can plan the budget, the food and any ticketing calmly instead of in a panic.
Consider the dates nobody else wants
Early December (the 4th or 5th) catches people before the party fatigue sets in. A Thursday often gets better turnout than a crowded Friday. And a January "after the holidays" party is cheaper to book and easier for guests to say yes to. Nobody has a conflict in the second week of January.
The one-week plan
- Pick two candidate dates and one backup.
- Call or email three venues this week and hold the best option.
- Publish a simple event page with the date and a "details coming soon" description, and send it as your save-the-date.
- Collect RSVPs early so you can size the space and the catering from real numbers.
