Sometimes midlife feels like an endless series of losses – the death of a parent, the irreversibility of a new climate threshold, the dismantling of another human right. What if instead of burying the grief, we faced it? Lauren Markham’s Immemorial is an extraordinary speculative essay on language in the face of climate catastrophe: how we memorialize what has been lost and what soon will be, all in the interest of pushing public imagination toward generative realms. Designer and spatial justice activist Liz Ogbu’s is working on a book that examines the grief that comes from feeling like the places where we live are broken; it interrogates what happens when communities fail to grieve—and what becomes possible when they finally do. These two remarkable artists will explore how processing untended grief can help us reimagine the present moment and the places we call home.
